Met Gala 2017

Last week, the annual Met Gala was held, the fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme was

Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garcons : Art of the In-Between.

Here is Commes des Garcons’ signature logo:

In the meantime, here is the subsidiary company – the casual luxury line directed at a younger target market, called Commes des Garcons Play:

I honestly hoped that some celebrities would have incorporated the Play quirky trademark into their outfits, like Comme des Garcons red heart nails. Or even eyes sewn at the base of the dress.

I don’t personally love Comme des Garcons as a brand, but it was interesting (read: hilarious) to see the photos of celebrities that paraded down the red carpet.

Let’s see the rundown:

The ones who channeled Comme des Garcons by wearing Comme Des Garcons –

RIHANNA

It’s not something anyone else would ever wear. Fortunately for Rihanna, she could pull it off. Unfortunately for her, I think she’s missing some shoulders now.

HELEN LASICHANH & PHARRELL WILLIAMS

Looking like an awkward teletubby.

TRACEE ELLIS ROSS

I think she borrowed some architectural curtains.

ANNA CLEVELAND

She looks like she has a hat sewn on her left knee. I rest my case.

SOFIA SANCHEZ DE BETAK

I actually like the dark blue material, and I feel like if that was made into a full dress, it would look 100 times better. But this blue with the yellow and black fabric… I don’t know what any of this is supposed to be.

The ones who dressed for prom –

CANDICE SWANEPOEL

She looks like an Amazonian warrior! But also really skinny. Can someone feed her a cheeseburger?

MIRANDA KERR

Only Miranda Kerr can pull off this dress and not look like she’s got massive chicken pox problems.

GISELE BUNDCHEN AND TOM BRADY

The prom king and queen were also the Met Gala co-chairs for the night. Gisele is a shiny disco ball and Tom Bradyis in a complementing shimmery grey.

KATIE HOLMES

Poor Katie looks like a deer in the headlights. What has Tom done to her?

ZOE KRAVITZ

Zoe Prom Dress Doll comes with her own corsage. Boyfriend not included.

The ones who wore high street brands to the red carpet –

JOAN SMALLS

Wearing Topshop and beach waves.

SOFIA RICHIE

Also in Topshop. This dress looks really ill-fitting on her.

BEHATI PRINSLOO

Also in Topshop. Dressing up her dress with lots of jewels.

JORDAN DUNN AND FUTURE

That came from H&M?

Jourdan actually does look like she walked out of the H&M store.

Future’s outfit looks nice, but a bit too tiny. It looks like he picked an outfit from the H&M Kids section. A longer jacket would have looked much better.

ASHLEY GRAHAM

Also from H&M. Maybe she was trying to channel a Spanish dancer? It did not come across.

STELLA MAXWELL

This tasseled dress is also from H&M. Great for Coachella, but maybe not so great for the red carpet.

NICKI MINAJ

Nicki Minaj’s outfit is also from H&M. This. This we just can’t talk about. Next.

The ones who looked like they came from the Capitol in the Hunger Games –

Read: The Hunger Games is a fictional dystopian world where the citizens of the Capitol are often dressed in outrageously rich costumes every day, for us commoners to gawk at and wish we were them.

CARLY STEEL

You can almost hear her screaming “TO BATTLE!”

KATY PERRY

I don’t know what the “Witness” word on her face is supposed to represent. I initially thought it’s supposed to reflect Katy’s political stance, such as on police brutality or LGBT rights (particularly since she was so vocal during the US presidential election campaign last year).

But apparently it might just be a promo on her new upcoming song.

Yes, I always overthink things.

KYLIE JENNER

She looks like she just stepped out from The Capitol.

KENDALL JENNER

Only a Capitol citizen can wear thousands and thousands of dollars and still look like she’s not wearing anything. That, or a Kardashian.

BELLA HADID

Please see above. Clearly, the Hadids are catching up with the Kardashians.

AMY FINE COLLINS

I think she took the “Art of the In-Between” theme a little too seriously.

(She also looks a bit like Gollum in this photo, which is really distressing to me.)

The almost-but-didn’t-make-it’s –

LUPITA NYONG’O

Lupita is well-known for her bold fashion moments on the red carpet. I think the feathers at the top just overwhelmed her.

This was not an outfit that showed her off, or complemented her skin tone, or was particularly memorable, and it shows.

EMMY ROSSUM

I like the monochromatic look she was going for, but the ribbon at the side looked awkward. Like a giant dumpling with a tail.

Perhaps it would look better if it was a bright red, and actually looked like a bow instead of bunched up material.

RITA ORA

Hey Rita, can Emmy Rossum borrow your big red bow? That’s exactly what I envisioned Emmy’s outfit needed.

As for Rita’s outfit, the red is such a great look but it basically looks like Wolverine got to Rita before she got to the Met Gala. I don’t know whether she’s unraveling, or she thinks she’s a Christmas tree. It would have been better if it was a mermaid dress in that red satin material.

KAREN ELSON

I think it’s a pretty pink dress, but the lace sleeves spoilt the look. It would have been a nicer dress if it just had the halter neck and silver brooch.

Karen’s fiery red hair was also clashing with the colour of the dress. A shade of brunette or black would have worked better.

KATIE LEE

I really like Katie’s dress! It fit her well, it looked like luxe velvet material and I like the pop of pink on the inner lining and accessories. But it wasn’t memorable enough, and I feel that the pink and red colours clashed too badly I think it would have been more interesting if it was an unexpected – like yellow and black, or royal blue with a mint green inner lining.

KARLIE KLOSS

Wearing a suit-style outfit at a place where you know most people would wear gowns and dresses takes a lot of confidence. Karlie pulled it off well. But the outfit wasn’t memorable. And what happened to her already short hair?!

The underrated best dressed –

AYMELINE VALADE

Bonus points for stepping of the box with an outfit that wasn’t a gown and is in an unexpected colour. Probably would look better without the green turtleneck she was wearing inside.

KATE HUDSON

Kate gives her own spin on the Comme des Garcons theme with an architectural sleeve. Keeping it clean in a soft white gown, she may have gone a little too far with the white hair.

JENNIFER LOPEZ

J.Lo has an incredibly fit body but doesn’t need to show it off every second. The cape is a royal touch.

REESE WITHERSPOON

Simple, but the blue top gives it an edge. I would have liked to see that blue material be a whole gown, but it’s nice that this dress reflects Reese’s personal style.

BLAKE LIVELY

Proving that her and Ryan Reynolds are #relationshipgoals, Blake wears this wihout looking like a peacock.

CARA DELEVINGNE

I like her confidence in pulling off a sparkly suit. The silver helmet head is a bit much though.

EMMA ROBERTS

Channeling her character Chanel Oberlin from Scream Queens. Yes to old Hollywood glamour without going overboard!
